School-Based Refocus Rooms

Sarah Reed Children’s Center provides a comprehensive continuum of programs and services for children throughout their development and across all environments, including the home, school, and community settings. Our service continuum provides trauma-informed, high-quality, and evidence-based therapeutic programming to children across Erie County.

What is a Refocus Room?

A Refocus Room is a calming space where students can go to redirect and restore their mental state, improving their ability to learn. It was created to help students identify their levels of stress and learn coping strategies to prevent themselves from getting to crisis level. Similar to a Sensory Room, it is a quiet room that enables students to take a break and refocus when they become overstimulated.

The purpose of the Refocus Room is to:

  • Improve student grades
  • Provide a quiet place to work
  • Teach students to reflect on their actions, reactions, and interactions
  • Avoid possible discipline referrals
  • Teach students coping skills to improve behavior and social relationships
  • Empower students to quickly regulate their stresses so they can return to the classroom
  • Help students with organizational and study skills

Teachers can send students if they:

  • Need a 5-10 minute break to reset and return to the classroom
  • Have assignments to make up
  • Are exhibiting behavior that does not meet classroom expectations
  • Need to decompress when overwhelmed with school and/or life stressors

In the Refocus Room, students:

  • Are monitored while completing assignments
  • Learn strategies to de-escalate behaviors
  • Discuss their emotions and behavior to get them back on track
  • Work through peer mediation
