21st Tennis Tournament benefits Children's Center

On September 3, 2009, the Westwood Tennis Club hosted the 21st Annual Women's Tennis Event that benefited the Sarah Reed Children's Center. This event evokes an idea that parallels the Children's Center's history, 25 like-minded women joining together to help area children with the added benefit of doing something they enjoy, tennis. Fran Buseck, Annalynn Shuttleworth, Emily Ingram and Melissa Buseck have been at the core of continuing this wonderful event. Eileen Cutri was responsible for outstanding homade hor'dourves and many who attended served up some talented tennis. Competive sets gave players like Diane Morosky, Vickie Hill and Laurie Bretz to showcase their game, while more leisurely matches allowed friends Sally Lund, Lee Carucci and Kathy Spafford to enjoy play for a good cause. The event raised nearly $2,000 for the purchase of school uniforms and classroom materials. As a small token of appreciation, all who attended received a gift of "Sarah's Soap", which is made by the children at the Center.
2009 B&L Golf Tournament

The 13th Annual B&L Charity Golf Tournament, benefiting the Children's Center, was held on July 29, 2009 at the Chautauqua Golf Club. Despite a steady rain, nearly 200 golfers showed their support by "Playing for the Kids". The day concluded with an awards ceremony featuring the signature "Outback Steakhouse" diner. The event raised $37,125 to support programs and services at the Center.
The Children's Center would like to thank the owners, employees and volunteers of B&L Wholesale for making this event so successful. We are also appreciative of Outback Steakhouse of Erie and the Hyman & Lillyann G. Parker Foundation for sponsoring the diner and UPMC and Lillis, McKibben, Bongiovanni & Co. for their tournament sponsorship. Additionally, a special thanks to all of our golf sponsors, volunteers and contributors that made the event possible. Great job!
Farewell party held for "Grandma" Caroline

Last month a luncheon was held to honor the Center's "Grandma". Caroline Kinsell has served as a foster-grandparent, knitting instructor and mentor for thousands of children during her 30 plus years volunteering at the Center. Grandma Caroline also inspired and mentored many of the direct care staff that showed up to thank her for her kind and even temperment. "She is an inspiration and a friend", commented Dennis Williams, Supervisor of the BCMS program. "She epitomizes and defines our mission. She is the Sarah Reed of our times", said Brenda Homansky. Thank you for everthing, we wish you well!

"Souper Bowl XI" rated "Best Ever"
The Children's Center held Erie's favorite food event, "Souper Bowl XI" sent everyone home happy and satisfied. Nearly 2,000 people sampled home recipes from 20 area restuarants with Chartwells of Edinboro taking home top honors. A frosty morning made for an early and hungry crowd filled the Shrine Club for samplings of recipes from French Onion and Chicken & Dumpling to Coconut Bean and Cured Tomato Gorganzola Bisque.
The Children's Center is deeply appreciative of the tremendous community support for this event. All of our sponsors, the participating restaurants and their staff, our agency volunteers and everyone who attended make this event so enjoyable and successful. Thank you Erie for your continued support.
